Camelard College Honors
FACULTY APPOINTMENT
The first, most essential, and indispensable Honor of the College is the Honor of Appointment to its Faculty in one of the ranks of Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Full Professor, or Senior Full Professor — all of which are explained in the "Qualifying for Membership" link under "Apply," above. The Faculty appointment includes a Letter of Appointment, a Brevet (Appointment Certificate), and, that most honored sign of Academic Tradition, the Gold Honor Cords to be worn around the neck.
To be accepted as a Faculty member of the College requires years of hard work in and dedication to the Magical Arts, as well as examination of qualifications by the Appointment Committee of the College.
Included in the Honor of Appointment is the rank of Fellow, a young magician under the age of 18. Fellows make up the student body of the College.
All other honors of the College (Valedictorian, Service Citation, and Trustee) are conferred only upon Faculty, with the exception of the Beneficus Ars Magia which may be conferred on Faculty or others.
VALEDICTORIAN FELLOW
The honor of Valedictorian (Latin: vale dicere, meaning "to say farewell") is awarded by the College to select Fellows of the College who, at their young age, have made meaningful contributions to the Art of Magic or to Magic's Allied Arts. This rare award consists of a large Brevet (certificate) and the gold Honor Cords. Only Valedictorian Fellows and Professors receive and wear the gold Honor Cords. Fellows are nominated as Valedictorian by one or more College Faculty. The first Valedictorian Fellow was awarded at the 2010 CCCC Faculty Convocation Breakfast during the annual (September) Magic In The Rockies convention at Fort Collins, Colorado. The honored Fellow is Derek McKee.
CCCC SERVICE CITATION
The Service Citation is presented by the Officers of the College to a Fellow or Faculty Member who has performed outstanding service to or on behalf of Camelard College.
BENEFICIUM ARTE MAGICA
The very high and rare honor of Beneficium Arte Magica ("One Who is a Benefit to the Magical Arts") is awarded by the College to those Magicians who have made specific contributions to the Art of Magic or to Magic's Allied Arts. The recipient does not have to be a Faculty Member of the College. The award consists of a large Brevet (certificate). If the Honoree is also a CCCC Faculty Member, then the Beneficium also receives the double black/white honor cords, the colors of the Magician's Wand. The Beneficium Arte Magica honor cords are worn with and in addition to the gold honor cords worn by all Camelard College Faculty.
The Beneficium Arte Magica was first presented in 2010 at the CCCC Faculty Convocation Breakfast during the annual (September) Magic In The Rockies convention at Fort Collins, Colorado. The first recipients of the Beneficium Arte Magica are Senior Full Professor Mark Weidhaas, President of the Society of American Magicians (2010); and Senior Full Professor Ed Hurtubis, former Regional Vice President of The International Brotherhood of Magicians and a founder/organizer of the prestigious magic convention, Magic In The Rockies. The Beneficium Arte Magica is always presented in person to the recipient by a Professor of the Faculty, at a Faculty Breakfast held at a magic convention.
TRUSTEE OF THE COLLEGE — Our Highest Honor
To be a Trustee is to hold the highest title and honor at Camelard. The Faculty of the College elects one Trustee biennially (every two years) from the list of Senior Full Professors. The ballots are made available on December 1, and the Trustee for the next year is announced on December 15. The Trustee receives a Brevet of Appointment and a large Warrant of Trusteeship, both suitable for framing. Additionally, the Trustee wears the gold and royal blue double honor cord. The Trustee of the College honor cords are worn with and in addition to the gold honor cords worn by all Camelard College Faculty. To be named as a Trustee of Camelard is a distinct and most distinguished honor and cannot be applied for.
Currently, the College has only three living Trustees: Past S.A.M. President Maria Ibanez; internationally acclaimed magician and magical instructor Jeff McBride, of the Magic & Mystery School; and internationally recognized entertainer and magical creator Bev Bergeron. Magic legend John Calvert was a Trustee until his death in September of 2013.
